Antique Clock Price Guide and Information

027 - Bracket ClockValuing a clock’s selling worth is not hard to do, but can be inaccurate, and is entirely at the mercy of an unpredictable market.

Learn more about what effects a clocks value by reading post #025, What is my Clock Worth?

Start by researching eBay and other auction results (sold). Consider these “sold for” results as a “whole sale” market price.  “Retail price” could be about 25-50% higher.

Be realistic, most times these whole sale prices will be the best you should expect if you want to sell a clock quickly. Otherwise, be patient to find the right collector willing to pay high retail pricing.

The “Sold Listing on eBay” below reflects completed auctions where items were sold in the last 90 days. These results automatically refresh as eBay updates its records.  Always check back for new results of the last 90 days.

Vienna Regulator Clocks

Characterized as wall clocks that are weight-driven, with a wooden pendulum rod, and deadbeat escapement, they are known for their accuracy in time-keepers.  They first came about in the 19th century as a response to British Long Case clocks and a move to produce smaller precision clocks. The German and Austrian clock making industries began to hand make these clocks in the mid 1800s.

Ship’s Clocks

A lever timepiece usually fitted in a round brass case and used on ships.”Bell” style Ship’s Clocks have a strike feature to sound a “watch” or period of duty on the ship, which replaced a manual system.  Although Seth Thomas began selling “marine clocks” in the late 19 century,  the Chelsea Clock Company designed and patented the first Ship’s Bell Clock in 1900.  Chelsea continues to make these clocks today.  A close cousin to Marine Chronometers, which are designed for precision time keeping intended for navigation at sea, Ship’s Clocks are mass produced practical implementations for calling time for duty purposes.

Maritime Chronometer

A marine chronometer is a timepiece (only uses a time mechanism) that is precise enough to be used as a portable time standard; it can therefore be used to determine longitude by means of celestial navigation. When first developed in the 18th century, it was a major technical achievement, as accurate knowledge of the time over a long sea voyage is necessary for navigation, lacking electronic or communications aids. The term chronometer is derived from Greek: chronos [meaning time] and meter [meaning counter].  (Wikipedia)

Figural Clocks

Figural clocks first emerged from the French clockmaking industry in the late 17th century under King Louis XIV. Compared to the austere English clocks of that period, these French clocks came out extremely elegant in design and decoration. They transformed the simplicity of that period into a confection of ornamentation.
Notice how French clocks tend to be loud and pompous in appearance.
For this reason, the French clockmakers were the most prolific in case design.  When you find an antique clock with an extravagant case design, most likely the 18th century French clockmakers were the inspiration. Many 19 and 20th century American and German clocks of this style are reproductions of the original French designs.

Boulle (Marquetry) Clocks

Boulle clocks are characterized by their ornate marquetry, which is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. French cabinetmaker André-Charles Boulle (11 November 1642 – 28 February 1732) pioneered this art in the 18th century. After he perfected the fashioning of inlaying brass and tortoiseshell, the style became known as “Boulle.”027 - Boulle Clock
